Megan Mudge Memorial Scholarship Fund
“The human soul is hungry for beauty; we seek it everywhere—in landscape, music, art, clothes, furniture, gardening, companionship, love, religion, and in ourselves. When we experience the beautiful, there is a sense of homecoming.”
--John O'Donohue, poet, author, philosopher
Board member Debra Hannula’s college friends, Kathy Coplen Mudge and John Mudge, lost their beautiful daughter Megan suddenly and unexpectedly on December 29, 2015 following a brief illness. She was 24 years old. Megan was an award-winning artist and a fun-loving free spirit. A piece Megan created in high school was chosen by former US Representative and now US Senator Dean Heller to hang in the US Capital for one year. Also while in high school, Megan painted two stunning murals that still adorn the walls at Reno High. Due to her artistic gifts, Megan graduated with a degree in Fine Art from the Northwest College of Art and Design. After her death, her parents and brother Luke set up the Megan Mudge Memorial Scholarship Fund, an art scholarship at her alma mater, Reno High School. The scholarship is awarded annually to a Reno High School senior “who has demonstrated proficiency in art while at Reno High and who intends to pursue further education in the field of art.” Additionally, $1000 is granted in her name annually to the Reno High Art Club to finance their art museum field trips. Megan’s mom, Kathy Coplen Mudge, was diagnosed with a serious illness last summer and died shortly thereafter on August 24, 2017. KABF gave a grant honoring both Kathy and Megan to the Megan Mudge Memorial Art Scholarship at Reno High School. |
We received this lovely note on behalf of the school from Theresa Shoolroy: Dear Kelly Ann Brown Foundation: On behalf of the Reno High School Scholarship Committee and Scholarship recipients I would like to thank you for your generous donation to the Megan Mudge Memorial Scholarship Fund. A well-deserving student pursuing the arts will benefit from your generosity. The world lost two bright artistic lights with the loss of Kathy and Megan. Kathy graduated from Washington State University as an education major. She and her husband John raised their two children Megan and Luke in cities and towns throughout the West, including Reno where they enjoyed 16 wonderfully creative years. Kathy was a beloved teacher to her students, her own children and also herself. She “had an eye for color and design,” according to those that knew her best and flourished in a variety of artistic mediums including detailed quilting, knitting colorful afghans, and designing and weaving elaborate beaded necklaces. In addition to the beautiful works of art we have to remember them by, the Megan Mudge Memorial Scholarship Fund is a compelling legacy for both Megan and her mom Kathy.
