We are Honored to Present Our 2020 KABF Grant Recipients!
Vashon Wilderness Program
"As long as I live, I'll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I'll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens and get as near the heart of the world as I can." — John Muir The Kelly Ann Brown Foundation continued our support of the wonderful nonprofit Vashon Wilderness Program in 2020. Despite the challenges due to the pandemic, VWP, which provides outdoor nature learning to children and teens, had plenty to report. Click here to read how they tailored their programs to continue to support kids while they sheltered in place. |
Louisiana-Mississippi Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (LMHPCO)
"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."
— Leo Buscaglia
In 2020, KABF gave another grant to the compassionate nonprofit Louisiana-Mississippi Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (LMHPCO), which provides end-of-life support to incarcerated people in prisons in Louisiana and parts of Mississippi. LMHPCO was introduced to us in 2014 by Kelly’s brother, KABF board member David Brown Steward.

El Centro de la Raza
"Para los niños y jóvenes trabajamos porque ellos son los que saben querer, porque ellos son la esperanza del mundo (It is for the children and the young that we work, for they are the ones who know how to love, for they are the hope of the world)."
— Roberto Maestas, co-founder of El Centro de la Raza
KABF gave again in 2020 to the impressively kind and active Seattle nonprofit El Centro de la Raza, whose mission includes building unity “across all racial and economic sectors, to organize, empower, and defend our most vulnerable and marginalized populations and to bring justice, dignity, equality, and freedom to all the peoples of the world.”

Impact A Village
"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened." ― Anatole France Suzy English, along with being a life-long animal lover and hair stylist extraordinaire, was a close friend of Kelly’s and remains close to the KABF board. She first learned about the Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) from world-famous cellist Jami Sieber, and after learning more, Suzy knew she needed to be with these magical creatures. Trans Buddy
“Healthcare for trans women is a necessity. It is not elective. It is not cosmetic. It is lifesaving.” — Laverne Cox The Trans Buddy Program at Western Psychiatric Hospital (WPSY) is a community-led, peer-support organization whose goal is to increase access to and improve the quality of healthcare for transgender, non-binary, and gender expansive people. The Kelly Ann Brown Foundation believes basic healthcare is a human right and we are proud to support the Trans Buddy program. Click here to read more. |
Get Out The Vote!
“The vote is precious. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have in a democratic society, and we must use it.”
— John Lewis, late civil rights activist and member of the US House of Representatives for Georgia
In 2013, when the United States Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act — a critical piece of legislation passed 48 years earlier due in large part to the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr — Republicans in control of state legislatures sprang into action. They passed and continue to pass laws with the specific intention of disenfranchising whole groups of people who typically vote for Democrats.
KABF is dedicated to supporting the nonprofits who want to help eligible voters vote, just as Kelly, who was an excellent political strategist herself, would want us to. Click here to read more about our GOTV efforts. |
