5 Gyres
“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” — Robert Swan, environmentalist
KABF has supported 5 Gyres since 2021. We are committed to their mission to “empower action against the global health crisis of plastic pollution through science, education, and advocacy.”
In late December 2023, we received a video recording as a thank you from co-founder Anna Cummins. In it she shared the year’s accomplishments:
"Hi Trustees of the Kelly Ann Brown Foundation. I wanted to personally thank you for your support of our mission this year. Thanks to your partnership, it has been an incredible year for our team. We’ve had some great wins in science policy and corporate engagement, all focused on reducing the global harm from plastic pollution.

"A couple highlights to share:
This work will continue as a core priority in 2024. We’ll continue to bring together brands and scientists to align around thriving solutions."
- We published seven scientific papers in 2023, including our global estimate on ocean plastics that received impressive media coverage.
- We presented the results from one of our studies, an 18-month study on how bioplastics breakdown in the environment, to the United States Senate in Washington D.C. You can listen to the full testimony as well as read any of our scientific paperson our website.
- We continued our work on plastic microfibers from the textile sector to better understand the sources of airborne microplastics that we’re all breathing in daily.
