Global Giving Foundation: Ukraine Relief
“It's a victory when the weapons fall silent and people speak up.” — Volodymyr Zelenskyy
After Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, KABF wanted to support the Ukrainian people and chose to give a grant to the Global Giving Foundation, a nonprofit that connects donors and companies to nonprofits that work in local communities doing good throughout the world.
They have been making a global impact for over 20 years. As they explain on their website: “Since 2002, we've helped trusted, community-led organizations from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe (and hundreds of places in between) access the tools, training, and support they need to make our world a better place.”
Global Giving gives all donations designated for Ukraine to the 30-year-old nonprofit Caritas Austria. The United Nations report on Ukraine states that at least 17.7 million people – nearly 40% of the population – need humanitarian aid. Since the start of the conflict Caritas has helped over four million people and counting. Clean water, food, clothing, shelter and psychological support are among the help Caritas is able to offer. Over 1,000 Caritas employees are on the ground in both Ukraine and neighboring countries that are taking in Ukrainian refugees. Sadly, three Caritas employees have been killed by Russian shelling.
“Elderly people, children and single parents, internally displaced persons and people with disabilities are among the most vulnerable groups who urgently need support from aid organizations."
Michael Landau, President of Caritas Austria and Caritas Europa, provides more information on their website: “Elderly people, children and single parents, internally displaced persons and people with disabilities are among the most vulnerable groups who urgently need support from aid organizations. Heavy fighting and shelling continue across several towns and cities in Ukraine, with increasing human cost and humanitarian consequence.”
When the Russians blew up part of the Kakhovka Dam on June 6, 2023 wide-spread flooding occurred. Caritas rushed in with sleeping bags, food, and hygiene essentials to help those who lost their homes. Despite the risks, Caritas is in Ukraine doing all they can to help.
